What you put on your skin may not be helping you as much as you think it is

Behind every mask there is a face, and behind that a story.

~ Marty Rubin

Goblins, ghoulies, and ghosties, oh my!

Yup, it’s that time of year. It’s Halloween! All the little, and not so little, tots come out dressed in their scary best looking for treats. Everyone has their best mask on to disguise themselves so no one will know who they are.

It’s a night filled with fun and festivities. I mean come on, who doesn’t love those cute little fairy princesses, the super-fast Sonic the hedgehog (it’s almost like the dwarves, are there really seven of them?), and the scary zombies chasing everyone down the street.

You know what’s super scary though? Not the college kids trolling for candy and definitely not the kid from down the block dressed up as an evil clown. It’s looking in the mirror and realizing that your skin doesn’t look as good as it used to. Boo!

Tired of being scared to look in the mirror?

Don’t stress about your reflection, there are solutions.

Obviously, you already know you need to drink more water. Hydration is one of the major keys to healthy skin. It keeps your skin looking good and helps you to detoxify, all of which is super important.

You also need to eat more vegetables. I know, I sound like your mother when I tell you to eat your veggies. It’s not as hokey as you think. One scientific study showed that people who ate more vegetables appeared to be more attractive. In as little as six weeks! (Please pass the broccoli.)

There’s more to your skin than just what you eat and drink though. There’s also an impact from the environment. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, nearly 70 million tons (!) of pollution was released into the environment last year.

You’re exposed to the environment, wherever you live, all day long. Even when you’re sleeping. All those toxins and pollutants in the air? They’re getting on your skin and the results? Well, it’s not pretty. In fact, one study from the Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that women who were exposed to higher levels of pollution had more wrinkles and an increased number of darker pigmentation spots. Unfortunately, it’s not like you can really do anything about the chemicals in your environment.

What about your skincare routine?

We have to remember part of how our skin looks is due to the aging process. Sure, that can play a role in your skin’s appearance, but how you take care of your skin goes a long way towards helping you to look your best.

Chances are you have a skincare routine. Whatever it is, however many steps, however many times a day, you’re putting a lot of product on your face. Did you know that might be part of the problem? According to a study done by the Environmental Working Group, American women put an average of 168 different chemicals on their faces and bodies. Every day!

Yup. Believe it or not, what you put on your skin may not be helping you as much as you think it is. You may think you’re getting great stuff because it says so on the label and it costs a lot. Well, as your mother used to tell you, don’t judge a book by its cover.

What are you really looking for when you’re taking care of your skin? It’s simple. You want to clean, soothe, and improve the appearance of your skin. So you need to make sure you’re using products that can actually do that. Lots of skincare companies claim to their products are the best thing for you. Then they turn around and put negative ingredients like those that are silicone-based into their foundation. These ingredients can create a lot of problems because they can clog your skin when mixed with your natural oils.

Silicone is just one ingredient. Many skincare products come with preservatives, colorants, artificial fragrances, parabens, or other chemicals. These are really not great for your skin. They can cause a wide range of issues from irritation and redness to allergies and more.

Not using a skincare routine? Maybe you’re one of those make-up wipe people. Unfortunately, those don’t really clean well. They definitely don’t soothe or exfoliate and they can leave chemicals behind. None of which is good for you. It’s time to ditch all those negative chemicals. You want your skincare products to have real, easy to understand ingredients. You want to provide skincare that can replenish and repair.
